Port Talbot Sea Cadets Feasibility Study

Port Talbot Sea Cadets, officially known as Port Talbot Unit 537 of the Sea Cadet Corps, is a charitable organisation dedicated to the development of young people aged 10 to 18 through nautical adventure and training.

Based in The Old Harbour House, Port Talbot, the unit offers a range of activities designed to build confidence, resilience, and life skills, all grounded in the traditions of the Royal Navy.

Managed entirely by volunteers, Port Talbot Sea Cadets provides opportunities for cadets to engage in both onshore and offshore experiences, fostering personal growth and community involvement.

I conducted a feasibility study for Port Talbot Sea Cadets to assess the potential of their leased site for developing and delivering activities.

This study involved a comprehensive evaluation of the site’s suitability, which included the review of a condition report on The Old Harbour House which had been commissioned earlier in 2024. The Old Harbour House is a listed building and an exploration of appropriate measures to renovate and restore it was a necessary aspect for the study.

Key aspects of the study included:

  • Identifying the stakeholders needed for future collaboration,
  • Consulting site users, staff volunteers and Sea Cadets to understand their needs and aspirations.
  • Analysing the site’s potential for commercial activity to support sustainability
  • Supply of initial next steps and recommendations to help the organisation move forward.

My role in this project underscores my ability to assess complex sites, engage key stakeholders, and deliver strategic insights that support sustainable and effective development initiatives.
